1906 San Francisco earthquake
Description:
1 videodisc (ca. 91 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences ; 4 3/4 in.
Summary:
"At the dawn of the 20th century, San Francisco was the place to be. Half a century at the center of the Gold Rush had transformed the once sleepy settlement into a hub of trade and travel, business and banking. But danger lurked beneath the bustling city, and on April 18, 1906, it erupted with a cataclysmic earthquake which opened up a 270-mile fissure along the San Andreas fault. MEGA DISASTERS travels back a century to examine the quake and its aftermath. While three days of fires virtually destroyed the city, people were rebuilding almost before the flames were doused. As structural engineers, seismologists and other experts reveal, the result was that the reborn city suffered from many of the same weaknesses as the demolished boomtown. Through computer modeling and other techniques, SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE shows the likely results if a quake of similar strength were to strike now--billions of dollars of damages, collapsed buildings and bridges, and casualties running into the tens of thousands."--A&E online catalog (website: store.aetv.com viewed 07/18/06).
